Do I Need a License to Rent a Scooter in Mexico?

AntonyOctober 13, 2026

Yes, you need a valid driver's license to rent a scooter in Mexico. Which one you hold matters too: a motorcycle license is the most reliable under Cancun's rules, and only with it does the insurance included with the rental cover you.

Below is what Cancun's traffic regulation says, what we ask for at AcuMota and what to carry on every ride. The regulation quoted throughout is the Reglamento de Tránsito of Benito Juárez, the municipality that includes Cancun, in its June 2025 version. Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos are separate municipalities; carry the same documents there.

Do you need a license to rent a scooter in Mexico?

Yes. Reputable rental companies ask for a valid driver's license, and Cancun's traffic regulation requires riders to carry one. We rent to riders 18 and older.

To rent from AcuMota, a valid car or motorcycle license from any country is enough. After you book, the confirmation email asks you to upload a photo of it, and that completes the booking. On the road the photo is not what counts: Article 23 obliges every driver to carry a valid license, so keep the card itself on you whenever you ride.

The license also has to be valid on the days you ride. Riding on an expired one is an offence under Article 37, fined at 10 to 15 UMA: about 1,170 to 1,760 pesos at the 2026 value of 117.31 pesos per UMA, the unit Mexican fines are set in, published by INEGI.

Is a car license enough to ride a scooter in Cancun?

To rent from us, yes. On the road, a motorcycle license is the safer choice: Cancun recognizes foreign licenses for the vehicle types they show.

Article 24 lets anyone with a valid license from another municipality, state or country drive in Benito Juárez "the type of vehicle that the document itself indicates". That is why a motorcycle category on your license is the most reliable choice: in the United States, a motorcycle endorsement or a Class M license.

We rent to riders with a car license too. If that is you, read the next section before you book: the included insurance depends on your license.

Insurance Depends on Your License Too

Every AcuMota rental includes third-party liability insurance at no extra cost. It covers injury and damage you cause to other people and their property, and only when the rider holds a valid motorcycle license. With a car license only, you ride without that cover and are personally liable for any damage to third parties, as section 12 of our rental terms sets out.

Whatever your license, the policy never covers damage to the rented scooter, its theft or total loss, or injury to you and your passenger.

Liability cover counts for more in Mexico than many visitors expect. Canada's official travel advice, for example, points out that Mexican liability insurance is mandatory, that Canadian car insurance is not valid in Mexico, and that after an accident a driver can be taken into custody and have the vehicle seized until responsibility is determined.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

Not in Cancun. Article 24 accepts any valid foreign license for the vehicles it covers. An International Driving Permit only translates your license; it never replaces it.

Government advice varies by country. The UK government says a UK photocard driving licence is valid for driving in Mexico; Canada advises its travellers to carry an International Driving Permit. If your license is not in English or Spanish, a permit helps a traffic officer read it, so carry the two together. The photo we ask for after booking is of your license itself.

What to Have Ready Before Delivery

We bring the scooter to your hotel or Airbnb in Cancun, the Hotel Zone, Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. Have these ready:

  • Your driver's license. Upload a photo through the link in your booking email, and keep the card itself on you whenever you ride.
  • The rest of the rental. You pay 30% online when you book and the remaining 70% at delivery.
  • The security deposit. $300 for one scooter, $250 for each of two, or $200 for each when you rent three or more. It is refundable and can be held on a card through our website or paid in cash to the courier.
  • No helmets to bring. Two come with every scooter, because Article 55 requires both rider and passenger to wear one, fastened.

Every requirement in one place is on our rental rules page.

What happens if the police stop you?

Show your license and ask which article was broken. Tourists can get a free courtesy warning for minor violations, up to twice, never for serious ones.

Article 6 sets out the procedure: the officer stops you, gives their name and ID number, tells you which violation you committed and shows you the article it is based on and the fine it carries, then asks for your license. If a fine is issued, the officer can keep your license as a guarantee until it is paid (Article 178); the original ticket stands in for it for five working days (Article 177).

Fines are not paid to the officer. They are paid at the cash desks of the Municipal Treasury or at authorised payment points, including online, and paying within 15 days takes up to 50% off (Article 179).

The courtesy warning comes from Article 172: a free tourist warning card for visitors who do not live in Quintana Roo, given instead of a fine at most twice to the same driver and never for serious violations. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, with a fine of 10 to 15 UMA under Article 55. The other rules worth knowing, from the alcohol limit to phones, are in our scooter safety guide. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rent a scooter in Cancun without a license?

No. We don't rent without one, and Cancun's traffic regulation requires every driver to carry a valid license.

Can I rent a scooter with a US driver's license?

Yes. Any valid US license lets you rent from us. A motorcycle endorsement or Class M license is safest under Cancun's rules and activates the insurance.

What is the minimum age to rent a scooter in Cancun?

Eighteen. We rent only to riders aged 18 or older with a valid license, which is also the minimum age for a motorcycle license in Cancun.

Does my passenger need a license?

No. Only the person riding needs a license. Your passenger must wear a fastened helmet, and each scooter carries one passenger at most.

If you plan to take turns riding, each of you needs a valid license.

Bring the Right License, Then Pick Your Scooter

If you hold a motorcycle license, bring it: it is the most reliable license for a scooter under Cancun's rules and brings the included insurance into effect. If you only have a car license, you can still rent from us. Then choose a model in our scooter catalog or compare prices for every model. Delivery to your hotel or Airbnb is free, even for a one-day rental.
